How to be your brand … and build it.

Now that we understand the importance of branding lets look at how to go about building a strong brand.

Consider your own personal values. How can you build these into your business? After all – this is your business, so you get to design it to your ideals.  Brand from the inside out. Start with yourself and build from there. By building your brand on a strong foundation – yourself – your brand will be stronger for it. Once you’ve got this in mind consider your mission. What do you want to do with your business? What is your goal? If you figure out a mission statement now and build it into your brand from the start the two will strengthen each other.

Consider your SWOT analysis. What was your greatest strength? Are you on the cutting edge of technology? Do you have access to a limited product? Are you comitted to running a green business in a market where no one else does? Think of what you want your company to represent and build this into your brand from the beginning.

Once you’ve got the basics figured out create a brand statement to remind yourself and your employees what you stand for and represent.  Start by filling in the blanks in the template below.

We [name of company] promise [customer group]  that they can count on us for [unique attribute or benefit]  delivered with [character, tone, mood].

Now continue to build on it until you feel you have a strong brand statement that defines you and your business’ brand. Keep it visible, keep it in mind, and keep to your brand!

Most importantly – once you know your brand you’ll have a guide for all your future actions and decisions. Never stray from this, even (and especially) under duress. If you are consistent even under pressure your customers will see this and it will strengthen your brand value all the more.

Branding is not just for livestock and big corporations!

Your brand image is one of your most valuable assets.  Whether you’re an individual, a small business, or a multi-national corporation, without a strong,  positive, and (hopefully) memorable brand image, your business isn’t likely to do very well. Your brand image is your identity in your customers mind. It is the promise you make that by coming to your business or using your services they will be rewarded with a certain level of quality and consistency. Your brand is what gives you value and sets you apart from others — and it strongly affects how your customers feel about your company and your product.

Every piece of communication and every action associated with you or your business affects your brand’s image. This includes both intended communications – such as advertisements, special promotions and community involvement, and unintended communications – such as staff behaviour, customer reviews, and whether you consistently stick to your businesses values.

How current and potential customers view you and your business will affect your reputation, the value of your product, and the success of your business.

As you have probably figured out by now, crating a strong brand takes commitment and consistency, because one poorly received advertisement, inconsistent product or transaction, or negative customer review will be remembered and repeated and can debilitate even the strongest companies.

However, don’t get too daunted. If you work hard to build a strong brand and continue to deliver on your promise to your customer, you’ll find many rewards. Your business will be easier to sustain, your products value will increase, and as a result you’ll be able to charge more for your services.

So you’ve got a great idea …

Do you have a great idea for a business endeavour? Are you passionate about a subject and thing you might have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Before you run to the bank for a loan there are a few essential steps to take first. This is the time to check out the competition and honestly evaluate you idea. What are the chances for another business like yours to open up and take all your customers? Is your idea related to a growing industry or do you have a unique idea that isn’t out there yet – and whether it is or not – how will you stand out from the crowd?

To answer these and many other very important questions you should be seriously thinking about before you really get started, you should do something we call a SWOT analysis of your entrepreneurial idea. For those who’ve not heard this term before, it stands for Strengths/ Weaknesses /Opportunities/ Threats, and this is when you need to be really honest with yourself about the potentials for your idea.

What are your idea’s strengths that will make you stand out from other similar businesses, and will draw customers to you rather than the competition?

What are some potential weaknesses of your idea? Can they be improved or avoided somehow? Will they seriously threaten the potential success of your business?

Are there many opportunities in this market and is there a likely potential for growth? Is there an opening in your specific market that you think you could help fill?

What are some potential threats to your business success – either in terms of already existing competition or the likelyhood of another similar business opening in your area?

Now is the time to come up with a game plan for dealing with any potential weaknesses in your plan or threats to your success, as well as to plan ahead for great success and how you’re going to capitalize on it. Once you’ve done your SWOT analysis, you’ll have a better understanding of where you stand with your idea. So get a pen and paper or open a new text document and start to evaluate your idea – it doesn’t matter what medium you use, as long as you’re honest and thorough.
